What is breast augmentation? Am I a suitable candidate for breast augmentation? What are the potential risks and complications of breast augmentation? All your questions are answered, find out more.

Breast Augmentation

1. What is breast augmentation, and how is it performed?

Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement, is a surgical procedure to enhance breast size and shape. Dr. Sadideen will make a small incision, typically in the breast crease, and insert an implant behind the breast tissue or chest muscle. Dr. Sadideen will take measurements at your consultation to help you choose the most appropriate implant, depending on your frame and requirements.

2. Am I a suitable candidate for breast augmentation?

Dr. Sadideen will take a thorough medical history and perform a physical examination to assess your suitability. Good candidates are generally medically and psychologically healthy, understand the risks and have realistic expectations.

3. What types of breast implants are available, and how do I choose?

There are different types of implants, each with its benefits. Dr. Sadideen will help you select the right type, size, and shape based on your desired outcome and body type. Dr. Sadideen will use state of the art simulation to help you choose the most appropriate size.

4. What are the potential risks and complications of breast augmentation?

There are implant risks (such as rippling, capsular contracture, rupture, rotation, deflation, ALCL) that all patients need to be aware of, in addition to general surgical and anaesthetic risk. These are generally low. Dr. Sadideen will discuss these risks with you in detail and provide guidance to minimise them and optimise results.

5. What can I expect during recovery?

Recovery varies from person to person but typically involves swelling, mild discomfort and bruising, which subside over time. You may need to take time 1 week off work and avoid strenuous activities for 4-6 weeks.

6. How long does it take to see the final results?

Your breasts will gradually settle into their final position over several months. It's essential to be patient and follow post-operative care instructions. Most patients appreciate their results immediately after surgery.

7. Are there long-term effects or maintenance required for breast implants?

Breast implants are not lifetime devices. They may need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear or complications. Generally we say that 10 years is a good lifespan, although they can last longer (or less in certain circumstances, such as weight or hormonal changes, pregnancy etc).

8. Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?

The implant does not tend to affect breastfeeding as the ducts are generally not damaged in this surgery. Discuss this with Dr. Sadideen before the procedure especially if you are planning to become pregnant around the time of surgery, whereby it is recommended to postpone surgery.

9. Will breast augmentation leave visible scars?

Incision scars usually fade over time. If you have a predisposition to unfavourable scarring e.g. keloid or hypertrophic, please inform Dr. Sadideen. He uses specialist techniques to minimise scarring, and there are topical treatments available to further improve scar appearance. These are discussed in detail at the time of consultation, and you will be shown images of patients.

10. How do I prepare for breast augmentation surgery?

Dr. Sadideen will provide pre-operative instructions. You may need to stop smoking, adjust medications, and arrange for a support system during recovery.

11. How do I choose the right size for my breast implants?

Dr. Sadideen will guide you through a sizing process, taking into account your goals and body proportions. It's essential to communicate your desired outcome clearly. He uses sizers and state of the art simulation to help you visualise potential outcomes.

12. Can I combine breast augmentation with other procedures?

Depending on your goals, you may be able to combine breast augmentation with other surgeries like a breast lift or fat grafting.

13. How soon can I return to normal activities?

Dr. Sadideen will advise when it's safe to resume normal activities. Walking and light home activities can commence immediately. Plan to take time off work and avoid strenuous exercises for a few weeks.
