Abdominoplasty

1. What is an Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a "tummy tuck," is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the underlying muscles, resulting in a flatter, more toned core. Mr. Hazim Sadideen performs a Brazilian abdominoplasty: a specialist technique based on lipoabdominoplasty (see below), without the use of drains, as a day case procedure.

2. What is Lipoabdominoplasty?

Lipoabdominoplasty combines liposuction with a traditional tummy tuck. This is Dr. Sadideen’s favoured approach to abdominoplasty. Dr. Sadideen almost always includes liposuction as part of the procedure. This approach allows him to remove excess fat and sculpt the abdominal area for a more refined outcome.

3. How do I prepare for surgery?

Dr. Sadideen and his clinical team will provide you with detailed pre-operative instructions. This may include lifestyle adjustments, dietary recommendations, and information on medications to avoid prior to surgery. It is important to quit smoking in all forms prior to (at least 4 weeks) and following surgery (at least 4 weeks).

4. What are the potential risks associated with these procedures?

As with all surgery, there are risks involved. These may include wound breakdown, delayed healing, unfavourable scarring, infection, seroma, umbilical necrosis and changes in sensation. Dr. Sadideen will discuss these in detail during your consultation.

5. What is the expected recovery time?

Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to light activities within 2-4 weeks. Full recovery may take several months. Dr. Sadideen will provide you with a personalised recovery plan. For example, this depends on BMI and muscle strength pre-op, volume of liposuction, and amount of muscle (divarification) repair.

6. Will there be visible scars after the surgery?

6: Yes, there will be scars, one horizontal one (potentially from hip to hip, depending on the amount of excess skin—and this is kept as low as possible), and one around the belly button. The horizontal scar is easily covered by clothing. Dr. Sadideen implements a specific scar care regimen to optimise healing and minimise their visibility. Scars can take 18 months before they become imperceptible. In a select few cases, there is also an additional vertical scar that extends from the horizontal scar; Dr. Sadideen will explain when this is necessary.

7. What kind of anaesthesia will be used during the procedure?

The procedure is typically performed under general anaesthesia, ensuring you are completely comfortable and unaware during the surgery. Dr. Sadideen also injects local anaesthetic into the area (and performs special nerve blocks) in order to minimise discomfort when you wake up.

8. When will I be able to see the final results?

While initial results will be visible after a few weeks, it may take several months for swelling to fully subside and for the final outcome to become apparent. This can be further enhanced with exercise and optimising nutrition. Results vary, depending on your starting point.

9. How long will the results last?

With a healthy lifestyle, the results of abdominoplasty and lipoabdominoplasty can be long-lasting. Maintaining a stable weight and regular exercise will help sustain your new look. Dr. Sadideen also offers non-surgical options to further increase longevity of results (e.g. injectable skin boosters and energy devices) in specific cases.

10. What are the best recovery tips that Dr. Sadideen recommends?

·       Follow Post-Operative Instructions: Dr. Sadideen will provide you with specific instructions on caring for your incisions, managing discomfort, and when to return for follow-up appointments.

·       Avoid Strenuous Activities: For the first few weeks, refrain from heavy lifting or vigorous exercise. Gradually reintroduce these activities under Dr. Sadideen's guidance.

·       Wear Compression Garments: These will be given to you immediately post-operatively and help reduce swelling and support the healing process. Dr. Sadideen usually advises you to wear these gor 6 weeks post-operatively (although you can change to spanx if you prefer).

·       Maintain a Balanced Diet: Proper nutrition aids in the healing process. Please follow the dietary guidelines provided by Dr. Sadideen. These include avoiding toxins, and optimising your gut.

·       Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to promote optimal healing and recovery, and nourish your skin.

·       Attend Follow-Up Appointments: These are crucial for monitoring your progress and addressing any concerns.
