Introduction to Breast Augmentation

Mr. Hazim Sadideen, Aesthetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon gives an overview of breast augmentation. Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most common performed procedures in the UK. The breast shape does change over time, with age, pregnancy, hormonal changes, and some patients may opt to increase the volume or size of their breast with surgery. Sometimes this can be preformed with other surgery such as an uplift. For us, a suitable candidate for breast augmentation would be an adult who is physically and psychologically healthy, and has realistic expectations. Breast augmentation can be in the form of implant surgery, where an implant or prosthetic is placed under the breast. It can also be done using the patients own fat. It is important to have a thorough discussion with the patient to ensure the most appropriate implant is chosen. This involves selecting the right size or volume, and the correct shape. Other important decisions will also be made such as the position of the implant, and this of course depends on the tissue characteristics of the patient, and patient lifestyle. A silicon implant in breast augmentation can be placed above the muscle or under the muscle, an important assessment is the thickness and volume of skin above the muscle. If this is of sufficient thickness then the implant is best placed above the muscle. Breast augmentation takes approximately 1.5 hours, and usually performed as a day case procedure. The usual full recovery time is 4 - 6 weeks, although of course you can get to much lighter activity earlier on. Some patients who would also like to have liposuction may consider fat grafting to the breast as their breast augmentation procedure. This is a different operation, but can also achieve excellent results in the right patient. All types of surgery carries an element of risk, breast augmentation surgery is generally considered safe, with a high satisfaction rate and low complication rate if performed safely.
